Shipwrecked in a fur seal rookery on St. Paul Island in the late 1980′s , the F.V. Ocean Clipper has become a death trap to the Northern Fur Seal pups, a fragile population that is in decline.
The Alaska Marine Stewardship Foundation formerly MCA Foundation partnering with NOAA and funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has taken on the task of permanently removing the wreak.
Home of the largest population of Northern Fur Seals, the St. Paul Island rookeries are where they go to pup. . . right where the Ocean Clipper lay. But not for long.
This 80 foot steel commercial fishing vessel, is being taken apart piece by piece and removed by way of highline, a wire rope system much like a high tech trapeze.
